After rice is harvested and knocked off of the stock it is placed on a flat surface so that it can dry. During this process, which can last a week or longer, the rice is moved about with a flat edged rake. When it is determined that the rice is dry it is swept into a pile and placed either in large sacks or baskets. It is then cleaned of debri and loose hulls with a machine made for this and then the hulls are taken off with a hulling machine that beats the rice splitting the hull. The rice is then separated from the hulls in the same machine and time.
