Northeast of the boat landing approximately 1km is one of the areas recently logged areas. Once the tree is cut it is left for one year to dry. While drying the tree also shrinks slightly which allows for the bark to be stripped from the tree as can be seen from the light colored logs in the distance. The bark is stripped in two steps.
When a tree is to be harvested a bottom section of the bark, which is about 4 ft in height is cut from the tree. This causes the tree to die and is normally done in the spring. When the tree is felled the rest of the bark is removed and used in making fires. The first bark cut from the tree is cut neatly from the tree and is used for roofing material or siding and has a lifespan of about 5 years.
