A rare sight. A Reticulated Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum) digging tortoise eggs! IMG_8465.jpg

This Gila was digging under the female Desert Tortoise after she had dug a hole and laid her eggs. So much work for the tortoise and so much energy, both in producing the eggs, digging hole with her hind legs, depositing the eggs and then the Gila eats them.

This is a very rare sight.

Image take after dark in the desert after a chance encounter though we were looking for Gila Monsters, to find a Desert Tortoise and a Gila Monster at the same time and to realize that the tortoise's eggs were being eaten is amazing.

Canon 7D, 100L macro and on camera flash. ISO 640

Catalina State Park. July 9, 2012.
