Dr. Amy Eisenberg examining an interesting flower (a single flower from the following 2 images. L1018041.jpg

Near a river below the new 7 Star Hotel across from the Pwunso Botanical Garden and next to Pohnpei Forestry, we found a couple of trees with a striking capitate inflorescences that are about 6-7 cm in diameter. The tiny fragrant pentamerous flowers have epipetalous alternate stamen between the petal lobes. The candle-like gynoecium is exserted about 4 mm above the petals. The minute golden yellow flowers are about 2 cm in length and the gynoecium has a distinct quill-like base that is inserted into the capitate head like a needle.

The glossy ovate-lanceolate leaves are opposite with striking light-colored venation. The leaves, petioles and sticky resinous leaf buds strongly smell like wintergreen.
