New large sized white fly infestation on a bell pepper plant. Chinese Pilot Farm. IMG_7447_8_9.jpg

I have now seen two types of white fly on Pohnpei. This white fly is about 10 times larger than others I have seen on Pohnpei. Most of the bell pepper plants were infested. This is on the Chinese Pilot Farm on Pohnpei.

This is the first time I have seen this large a species of white fly on Pohnpei. The other infestations I have seen around the island are very small and require a loop to see easily. These are quite large by comparison and easily seen, as noted by this image.

June 29, 2011.

I have contacted Pohnpei Agriculture, FSM Forestry and the extension agents at CES, Cooperative Extension Agents. This new whitefly, which I was first to identify, will devastate the food crops on Pohnpei. I hope that someone takes action. I have seen this whitefly no where else on Pohnpei. It would appear that the Chinese Pilot Farm has somehow introduced this pest.

I hope this is controlled soon....I remember aphids killing the pinetrees in the Smokies.
