A very young coconut crab still using a off cast shell for a home. L1009447.jpg

Coconut crabs once large enough do not use a shell as this one is. They can obtain weights of over 40 pounds. Because they are eaten and easy to catch, coconut crabs have become fairly uncommon on Pohnpei with this one being the first one I have seen in 4 months and it was in a remote area on an outlying island.

I thought it was a hermit also but it was large and a local said that this is the way the coconut crabs start out. Its body was different from that of a hermit crab. I am open to it being a hermit crab though as that is what it looks like to me.
