The ancient limestone works

Limestone processing has been a local and small-scale activity for a very long time. Like as with sawmills, local farmers joined up and built a kiln for the very local needs of masonry, fertilizer and disinfectants. In some cases even local foundry- and glassworks were supplied. Most of these small scale sites disappeared in the transformation into the modern time, places like this can sometimes be found out in the countryside. Although with an apparently very low capacity, the presence of a Decauville type railway and air compressor for the limestone mining gives a clue that it was a fairly serious business after all.
