Here was once one of the four tanks holding one ingredient of the liquid rocket fuel. Just prior to the state of maximum alert, the four ingredients were mixed and was pumped into the rockets. Over the entrance to this particular room is the Russian word of "OPASNO" written - Dangerous. Presumably a fair amount of residuals were left here when they left in 1978.

The main fuel was a mix of kerosene and nitric acid. With addition of very reactive stuff, such as the very toxic couple nitrogen tetroxide and hydrazine, one could wonder how people could have survived in this confined premises. The most reactive stuff was probably the fuel used in the first rocket stages.

Despite the OPASNO nature, these stainless steel tanks were apparently too tempting for the locals. Over the years, these tanks were cut into pieces and sold for scrap. I've heard that some people died of mysterious medical conditions after that.
