The old rail bridges at Gysinge

Rusty steel really gives a nice and warm tint at sunset. Late autumn and in winter time, the low azimuth gives long shadows, even from the rivet heads.

The traffic on the rail line Sala-Gysinge-Gävle de-facto ended in 1964 and the majority of the track was torn up in 1971-72. The line's restricted axle load of just 12 tons (mainly due to these weak bridges) made this shortcut through mid-Sweden less useful, and the line became an insignificant auxiliary path. The final years, the speed limit over the bridges was just 20 kph (10 kph for freights!!), and it has been said that even at that low speed, the bridges were ratteling like snakes when a train passed. Most of the track bed and the steel bridges over river Dalälven from 1900 at Gysinge have been left "as is" and are now open for pedestrians. At Gysinge, there are two major crossings over the river, each having the same style of light steel bridges, all proudly marked with the manufacturer's sign "Gothenburg mechanic workshop 1900"
