Rev. Bascom Anthony - First Assignment Was Jacksonville, Ga. Charge

Bascom Anthony started his preaching career at Jacksonville, Ga., Methodist Charge after he had married (1880) and taught school a year. He became a legend of leadership in the Methodist Church and his story is told in "Fifty Years In The Ministry." I want to thank Rev. James Duke for a copy of that book and Mr. Charles Shelton for a great picture of Bascom Anthony. It is only with these kinds of contributions from interested people are we able to bring back "the life and times of yesteryear." I am truly grateful that so many people have seen fit to become a part of this effort. Post Note: Mr. Charles Shelton's ancestor, Major Charles Shelton of War of 1812, helped my ancestor, Lt. Joseph Williams, get his Rev. War pension reinstated. It had been taken away by unscrupulous politicians.

My 87 year old mother is related to the Anthony's by marriage and still tells lots of stories about them. Bascom's son, Mack, married her mother's sister. We knew all of Mack's children: Mickey, Jimmy and Bascom (Bud). Bascom (Bud) is still living. He is my mother's favorite cousin. We visited him this past summer 2014. Bascom Anthony purchased a part of Doboy Island and it has stayed in the family. My mother spent many summers on Doboy with the Anthonys. Would love to correspond with anyone about this family's history.

Becky Wakim, I am also the great-great grandaughter of Rev. Anthony; and my great grandmother was Josephine Keye. Would like to connect on how we are related.

I am also interested in any additional pictures that anyone has - these are great.

Rev. Bascom Anthony is the brother of my greatgrandfather, Will Anthony. I would love to contact his descendants. My address is Bennett Horton, 321 Wesley Road, Knoxville, TN 37909-2652, phone 865-584-9635 and my email address is bfhorton@comcast.net. I have just received a Christmas card from Dr. Bascom Anthony, the Rev. Bascom Anthony's grandson by Rev. Mack Anthony. Dr.Bascom Anthony lives in Washington, D.C. until the fall of 2009.

Great Website. Rev. Anthony was a member of Landrum Lodge no. 48 in savannah, if this is the correct person. He affiliated in 1900, having previously been affiliated with St. John the Baptist Lodge at Valdosta, Ga.

I have read, with great interest, the postings for Rev. Bascom Anthony. I am researching the Anthony family as it ties into my Miller family. I would be happy to communicate with any who are interested. As for the book, Fifty Years in the Ministry, there is a copy in the Southern History section of the Birmingham Public Library. I believe it is a protected copy now, in that it can't be lent out, but is readable in the library itself. Also another copy was on sale at antiqbook.com/boox/noa/6465.shtml as of 27 January 2008.

I am a great-great granddaughter of Rev. Anthony. His daughter Josephine was my great-grandmother. I have been wanting to find his book, but haven't been able to find it anywhere. Do you know where I could get a copy? Thank you! Becky Wakim

I'm very glad that I happened on this website!! It has great photographs and I'm sure the text and stories are just as interesting. Sadly, I don't have any relatives/ancestors from this area, HOWEVER, I have found this wonderful photograph of Rev. Bascom Anthony, who married my grandparents in 1917, in Valdosta, Ga. It will be a welcome addition to my personal family history files.

Thanks for having a great website!!
