Lawtey Fl 06/01/07

Lawtey, Fl.

Just about half way between Jacksonville Fl. And Gainesville Fl. on highway 301 is a little town called Lawtey. The speed limit on this stretch of highway drops from 65 MPH in rapid succession to 55 MPH, 45 MPH, 35 MPH and then to 25 MPH. It’s a classic “Speed Trap” and I truly believe the major source of income in the little town is from the speeding tickets that the town police hand out. The town has such a horrible reputation for being a “Speed Trap”, and there’s been so much public outrage over the years, the AAA Automobile Club has invested it’s own money to erect one sign to the North of the town and one sign to the South of town to warn the highway traffic. Yes … you read that right … the AAA Automobile club pays for the signs. The locals that travel this stretch of the road know of the town’s reputation of course, and always slow town … but there’s no doubt that hundreds of thousands of dollars are paid to the city coffers from unsuspecting through traffic … even WITH the warning signs.

Hey, at least they're honest about it. Anyone that drives by that sign and gets a ticket deserves it.

I think everyone who gets a ticket there should ban together and decide to keep the entire PD in court all day every day!!! FIGHT your ticket there. It does not cost a lot to do even if to make a point. I fought my greater than $300 ticket from my home state and got the fine SEVERLY reduced, no points, no class, the officer was tied up in court and not issuing another ticket while he was there, and it only cost about $100. In my case I saved money by fighting the ticket.

This town is designated as a speed trap FOR A REASON. BECAUSE IT IS. No one person can figjht them alone, but masses of victims of the traps can. The practice will not stop until we make it stop. Thanks for listening.
