Just about half way between Jacksonville Fl. And Gainesville Fl. on highway 301 is a little town called Lawtey. The speed limit on this stretch of highway drops from 65 MPH in rapid succession to 55 MPH, 45 MPH, 35 MPH and then to 25 MPH. It’s a classic “Speed Trap” and I truly believe the major source of income in the little town is from the speeding tickets that the town police hand out. The town has such a horrible reputation for being a “Speed Trap”, and there’s been so much public outrage over the years, the AAA Automobile Club has invested it’s own money to erect one sign to the North of the town and one sign to the South of town to warn the highway traffic. Yes … you read that right … the AAA Automobile club pays for the signs. The locals that travel this stretch of the road know of the town’s reputation of course, and always slow town … but there’s no doubt that hundreds of thousands of dollars are paid to the city coffers from unsuspecting through traffic … even WITH the warning signs.
