The wooden resonator is easily remarkable by its quadratic shape. It is placed on a foot in order to prevent it from slipping from the players knee. The instrument is held vertical while playing, the left hand presses the strings while the right hand leads the bow.

Die Erhu läßt sich leicht durch ihren sechs- bis achteckigen Resonanzkörper erkennen. Der darunter angebrachte Block verhindert das Verrutschen des Instruments. Die linke Hand greift die Töne ab während die rechte den Bogen führt.
