Like with the Chinese Sanxian and the Japanese Shamisen, the Thinh knows no frets and makes sliding very easy. It is commonly tuned in a fifth or fourth and the deeper chord is sometimes used as a drone. Several Persian and middle eastern lutes remind of lutes like this, for example the Turkish Saz.

The two stringed Dan Ngyuet from Vietnam is a mixture of a lute joining a guitar. It sometimes replaces the Dan Da lute in the "hat a dao" singing tradition and is a very important part of smaller ensembles, also knowing some solo literature today.

Like the Chinese Pipa and the Vietnamese Tyba we find deep frets, alowing wide variations of the tome like bending, sliding and tremoli. Scales are split on both chords, so the deeper chord not only functions as a drone.

This is the Vietnamese version ("Dan Tam") of the typical three stringed lute which we find all over Asia. The ancestor of these lutes might have been the Chinese "Sanxian", the most popular is the Japanese version called "Shamisen". All these instruments mainly get used in the chamber music.

The three strings run over a bridge and get resonated by the wooden box which is covered by snake skin (dog skin in Japan). This wooden box resonating reminds us of a simple drum and reflects the idea of using the instrument in both melodical and rhythmical purposes.

This is the four stringed lute Pipa from China. It is one of the oldest solo instruments in Asia. Like the Vietnamese Tyba it seems to have evolved of the Persian lute Oud.

As you can see on this picture the frets do not reach up as high as on the Tyba. The neck is seperated in two parts, the black frets are cut in triangles called "xiang" while the white frets are simply glued on the surface. Most of the cheap student models do face problems in tuning because of the wrong distance between the frets.

If the holes for the four tuning pegs are to wide, the peg moves to easily and the tuning might change. A good Pipa keeps the tuning for a long time while a cheap model has to be retuned every time before plaing. The black colour of the "xiang" indicates a kind of "no viewing" zone - of course they get used, but not that often.
