Villa Torlonia

Just a mile or two from the centre of Rome, along the Via Nomentana, surrounded by a beautiful park and gardens,
the Casino Nobile of the Villa Torlonia was built as the main residence of the Torlonia family by Giuseppe Valadier
at the start of the C19th, and completed by Giovan Battista Caretti in 1832–40.
.
Decades of abandonment followed its use as Mussolini's private home, but it has now been renovated to very much
the state it formerly enjoyed, with the restoration of a profusion of decorative elements by the best-known
artists of the time, including Bertel Thorvaldsen, Francesco Podesti, Francesco Coghetti and Luigi Fioroni.
.
On the top floor, a collection from artists and sculptors of the Roman School (Scuola romana).
.
In the grounds, the Casina delle Civette houses many beautiful works in stained glass - the
photos of that are now here ___ http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/civette

And look here for the story of how Villa Torlonia almost didn't get through the Second World
war: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/7422002/Britain-planned-Dambusters-assassination-of-Mussolini.html
