:: Favignana ::
Largest of the Egadi islands - off Trapani, to the west of Sicily - Favignana is
perhaps known best for its annual 'matanza', a traditional method for landing the
huge tuna fish that are trapped in a system of nets and corridors as they pass by.

A pretty spot on Sicily's north coast, with a stunning Norman cathedral (Il duomo) whose Presbyterium is decorated with gorgeous mosaics.

:: Ancient Mozia ::
The Laguna dello Stagnone, north of Marsala on Sicily’s west coast and once a safe refuge for shipping between
North Africa and Italy, contains four islands. On one, Mozia (also known as both Mothia and Motya), there was
an important Phoenician settlement - rediscovered in 1888 by Joseph Whitaker, the son of a family in the Marsala wine trade.
Today the island and museum - managed by a foundation created by the family - can be reached on a small boat which
follows the submerged ancient causeway, built to carry the siege engines of the Syracusan tyrant - Dionysius the
Elder - who succeeded in displacing the Phoenicians in 379 BC.

:: Laguna dello Stagnone ::
Since Roman times the margins of the lagoon have provided ideal conditions for extracting
sea salt, and salt pans and windmills abound.

The variety of colours in the concentration pools, the heaps of purified white salt, blue
skies and the mill sails give the area a beauty all its own.

Pantelleria - Lago Specchio di Venere
Venus' Mirror, a small lake in the north of this tiny island.

September 1999, after a three-flight journey - London to Milan,

Zibibbo grapes, being ripened and dried in the sun, to concentrate
both sugars and flavour - an essential stage in the preparation of
the island's celebrated "Moscato" and "Passito" desert wines
