:: Procida - and two churches ::
The island's patron saint - the archangel Saint Michael - is celebrated each year
on September 28th, with his votive statue on display at the Abbey (dedicated, in
Italian, to "San Michele Arcangelo").
The Abbey is at the centre of the walled city, the Terra Murata - the islanders'
stronghold in medieval times when raids from north African pirates were common -
- is the centre of the festa.... but do also allow some extra time to go downstairs
and see the extensive range of rooms and crypts used by the local Confraternities.
This visit coincided with the ceremonial re-opening of Santa Margherita Nuova, a
church that had once been part of an early Dominican monastery - whose restoration
had taken some 15 years to plan and complete!

:: Beautiful Procida ::
A collection of photos from many visits... including a few from the Abbey where,
after a robbery, they no longer allow the use of cameras
:: Procida - January 2011 ::
A gorgeous winter's morning over on the island of Procida, to welcome in the New Year
Our first visit to the Museo "Ciro Manzueto" - up near the Terra Murata - which houses
a collection of figures and other elements from floats made for the Good Friday
"Procession of the Mysteries", and a wander back through the sidestreets.
More captions, and a tidy-up, eventually!
:: The Terra Murata - mostly Oct '08 ::
An orphanage, an abbey and a prison - photos taken in the oldest, and highest, part of the island of Procida
Nearly all - except the views from the sea - taken during a visit in late October 2008

:: Processione dei Misteri - 2011 ::
Photos from Procida's Good Friday procession... almost five hours of exhausting
work for the boys and men taking part - and nearly as tiring for spectators, some
of whom were on the ferry from Ischia by 6.30AM...

:: Procida - Good Friday 2003 ::
Each year the people of Procida stage a huge procession of decorated tableaux - I Misteri -
which takes several hours to snake down from the Terra Murata through the town's narrow
streets to the main harbour, Marina Grande.

Map of Procida and Vivara
The "Original" size version of this should be large enough to print.
As an idea of scale, the area of Procida is c.4 km2 - less than 2 sq miles.
The tiny islet of Vivara - off the northwestern corner of Procida
and the site of a submerged neolithic settlement - is a nature
reserve, and only very rarely reachable over the bridge which
links the two.

Looking towards Ischia
On the northern coast, on a lovely October day - one of several sections of the
Spiaggia di ciracciello - which ends near the Chiaiolella yacht harbour

Spiaggia di ciracciello
October again - and very quiet!
The western end of the beach with - behind us - the Chiaiolella yacht harbour...
an easy bus ride from the island's main port.

Spiaggia della chiaia - busy at the end of July!
Very popular, despite being fairly hard to get to,
involving a long steep series of steps and stairs
