La Rocca - Monte Petrino
The first recorded inhabitants were the Aurunci tribe and, in 375 AD, this was where
the village of Petrinum was founded, after an earthquake destroyed nearby Sinuessa.
During the Middle Ages, the area was occupied by the Normans, who built the Rocca -
a strategically important castle on Monte Petrino (412 metres ASL) - that was
subsequently stengthened and modified by the rulers, the new Aragonese dukes.
The Torre - tower - of the Ducal Palace
Once the Saracens had been driven out, it was possible for people to descend from the
hilltop fortress, and the Ducal Torre was built in the C13th.
