Easily reached by train from Naples or Salerno, the ancient Greek temples and museum at Paestum make an ideal daytrip out of the city.
The Royal Palace at Caserta
Built to rival Versailles, the Regia di Caserta - and its extravagant gardens and waterfalls - can easily be reached from Naples, by train or on the bus.
Poppea's villa - Oplontis
They were digging up the road one day and found this - a whole villa, with frescoed rooms still intact.
In its small way, Poppea's Villa in the town of Torre Annunziata makes an interesting trip - better preserved and more easily understood than the remains at Pompeii, Herculaneum etc.
Pozzuoli - the Solfatara
A steaming hell of mud and sulphur that sits on an active volcano at the edge of the city.
