The government in northern Italy was eager that Garibaldi's forces should not
continue on into the Papal States - at that time under French protection.
A division of the regular army, under Colonel Pallavicino, was dispatched against
the volunteer bands and the two forces met in the rugged Aspromonte mountains.
Although Garibaldi forbade his men from firing on fellow subjects of the Kingdom
of Italy, he himself was shot in the foot - through this very boot.
The wound refused to heal completely so, after a fund-raising tour of Great Britain,
in 1864 he was eventually shuffled off to the thermal spa town of Casamicciola - on
