The Pio Monte della Misericordia ("Pious Mount of Mercy" in Italian) is a Neapolitan church
and brotherhood. Amongst their early works was the establishment on Casamicciola's seafront
of one of the first charitable hospitals for the elderly infirm.
To here they could be brought from Naples to benefit from both the generally better conditions,
and the island's various paliative and curative thermal treatments... spa waters to fix all
manner of ills, and the application of hot sands and muds.
Today the building - where many of the earthquake victims died - is still in ruins.
