Castel Sant'Angelo

Construction of this extraordinary building, on the western bank of the Tiber and near to where
the Vatican stands today, was ordered by the Emperor Hadrian - who intended it to serve as a
mausoleum, both for himself and his successors.

Over the millennia it was then turned into a fortress, and incorporated into the city's defensive
walls, before then being used as a barracks, the home of the Vatican Treasury and - most recently
of all - a museum.

It was here - during the 16th century - that Pope Clement VII hid himself away during the 'sack of
Rome' by the Holy Roman Emperor of the day, Charles V.
