Black Background Paper Reflects Light!

Black Background Paper Reflects Light!

So badly, that I had to turn off the room lights at night in order to get this picture. There was barely enough light for the camera to focus, but the focus assist light in the 580ex must have helped for this. Catchlight panel was lifted. Camera on manual to make sure a short shutter speed would make background dark. I'm told black felt or velvet would work better. Actually I got better results from a black knit skirt, but it was too small to be of much use. Consensus of opinion on the Lighting Forum at is that black velvet is the least reflective of background materials. Also, you should make an effort to have the subject as far away as possible from the background so that light fallout will create an underexposure of the background - manual settings should be used on both the camera and the flash.
