_MG_1233 Male Northern Flicker

I was surprised to learn that the Northern Flicker is a ground feeder, according to http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_flicker/id He's eating my no-melt suet mix:

1 cup crunchy peanut butter
1 cup lard (not vegetable shortening)
2 cups quick-cook oats (regular oatmeal works just as well)
2 cups cornmeal
1 cup plain flour
1/3 cup sugar

Melt lard and peanut butter in microwave. Stir in remaining ingredients. Pour into square or rectangular container. Refrigerate and cut into squares and serve the birds (and squirrels). They love it!

What a wonderful visitor to your feeder! Plumage details are very well captured!

Great shot - ground feeder surprises me also - I have several in my yard and they never feed off the ground but on my feeder. These are beautiful birds. V
