_MG_0041 Blue Mud Wasp

It's been identified on bugguide.net. I'm told that it is using an old organ pipe wasp nest (see picture in this gallery). I'm also told that they feed mainly on black widow spiders, but they sure do seem to enjoy the thyme flowers this one is snacking on.

This little guy looks like a blackhawk helicopter, black and scary. My husband and I once ventured too close to a military facility while out on a drive. Up over a hill right in front of us, rose this Blackhawk, with it's nose just sort of pointed down at us. A voice came over a loud speaker, instructing us to vacate the area immediately. Talk about scary. This is the look this little guy has! Ha.
