Canon Powershot A80

The A80 is a lovely camera, but must be watched outside since it tends to overexpose on bright sunny days. A good rule of thumb is to use a minus ev setting of 2/3 when you have lots of bright highlights. Flash performance indoors is excellent, rendering great skin tones. One note of interest: The ISO ratings are very conservative with ISO 50 being much more like 100 and 400, more like 800. Noise is very low (let me rephrase that now that I have the 20D: "reasonable") at higher ISOs.

Update: I've just recently started using the "Sound Memo" feature of the camera to put backgrounds behind some of my images. I find the sound quality quite good. Sadly, the quality of the same feature in my new A610 isn't as good as that of the A80. Much more hiss. Truly amazing pics you have created! I own a Canon A80 too but I never ever thought I can be this creative with it. I even considered buying the Canon 300D when I don't even know how to ust the shutter speed and ISO settings! You are a truely a fantastic photographer, you can prove its unneccessary to spend housands of pounds to get images like this. Any tips? Or any particular books you suggest? Hi Isabel, I found out about your gallery thru your e-mails to DogWorks. I love it! I am using it to set up the background on my computer. I chose the gift shop at the bakery in Saluda, because that's where I like to ride my bike on the weekends; and the lovely fall time shot of Carl Sanburg's lake is what I have up now for the fall time. Thanks, it makes working on the computer much more enjoyable with the reminders from my favorite local outdoor spots. Hope you are enjoying agility as much as me & my weimaraner Gracie have. Hi Isabel I really like the photos on your site, and like many others, I have been trying to pick between the canon s400 and the a80. The only thing putting me off the a80 is the problem of blown highlights and purple fringing. I live in the middle of England, and we have a lot of overcast days. So I am worried that this could ruin a lot of my photos. You mention that this can be avoided by manually setting the ev value. Would it be possible to post any photos with purple fringing, and then the same photos after you have tweaked the settings, so that I could see the difference? Thanks Ben Pendlebury

Very nice - what I had time to look at. I just bought the Canon Digtial Rebel - loaned my Minolta S404 to my 2 sons. I still shoot fil, though. I was in Asheville back in June for the first time in 11 years! Hope to get back theere this Spring. David

Pretty darned excellent! Do you check the low light images in the A80 gallery? I was very turned off by the lack of low light focus assist with my Coolpix 900 and 990 and succeeding cameras have had low light focus assist. That in the A80 works very well for me. Isabel

hi, i'm coming from using the nikon coolpix 5000, i hated the low light/no light photos. the flash sucked on it. i was tempted to get the sony dsc-v1 because of the low light photo capabilites. how do you rate the a80 in terms of low light photos?

How would you compare the macro shots between the S400 & A80? Also, when you do B&W photos, do you select the B&W setting in the camera, or do you do it all in post-production? Please post or email me scott@akghetto.com... THANKS!

Thanks Much, Isabel! Have jsut started looking at and trying to choose my first digital camera. The Canon S-400 and A-80 were at or near the top of the list of possibilities. Your pictures (especially the same shots using the S-400 vs. A-80) have tipped the scales towards the A-80. Your pictures are GREAT and very enjoyable! Love your cat! Curt
