Gorillas - Pete's Group

These are photographs of one of the zoo's two groups of western lowland gorillas. Pete's family is the "original" and best-known gorilla group of Woodland Park Zoo; it was founded by wild-caught infant males Kiki and Pete, and wild-caught infant females Nina, Engine, and Caboose in 1968-69. Their current exhibit, open since 1979, was the first naturalistic gorilla exhibit in the world - featuring trees, bushes, grass, a stream, a pond, logs, flowers, and a covered viewing shelter with heat lamps, heated rocks, and hay. The group currently consists of Pete, Nina, their daughter Alafia, Alafia's daughter Naku, and Pete's granddaughters (via his daughter Jumoke) Nadiri and Akenji. To read more about the members of this group, visit their profiles on the zoo's website.
