Fort Ross, an old Russian Outpost

Fort Ross is located along the coast of Northern California.
It was established in 1812 by Russian explorers to serve as a hub for various Russian settlements. These were primarily supported by the fur-trading business. The fort remained active until circa 1842 when the Russians vacated the area due to dwindling marine mammal population caused by over-hunting by international hunters.
Today Fort Ross and surrounding area is a state park.
