2009 January California & Arizona Transcon Railfanning

An informal gallery of grab shots while railfanning BNSF's transcontinetal mainline from Southern California to Arizona on Thursday, January 8, 2009.

Departed Pasadena at 4:00 AM PT. Objective was to get somewhere east of Ludlow on the Needles Sub in the Mojave Desert and find dawn and a train. Then head east looking for trains to shoot on the way to New Mexico.

Sunset from home in Old Pasadena the evening before an early morning departure. I hope this foreshadows many trains and some glint.

I arrive at East Siberia along old Route 66 in the Mojave Desert to find an orange chrome sky and a green signal for an eastbound. Something has built a nest on the signal bridge.
