McClellan Ranch

Riparian habitat in Cupertino. Sycamore, Black Walnut, Box Elder; some Red Alder, no Ailanthus. Stevens Creek
runs through it; a great variety of macroinvertebrates inhabit the rocks and gravel at the bottom of the stream.

In spring a patch of Latticed Stinkhorn irrupts along the trail near the stream; briefly, several species of flies (Diptera)
are attracted by the carnivore-scat-like odor (Calliphorids, Scatophagids, Sarcophagids, others TBD). Vultures have been
seen here when there was no real carrion about, suggesting that the Stinkhorns may fool Cathartids as well as insects.

Another fetid plant that bloomed after a late, cold La Niña-year spring in June of 2011 is the Dragon
Lily Dracunculus vulgarus. This one attracts a number of beetles as well as several species of flies.
