Smuts SK "The only structure looked after is the Church"

Smuts is located on highway 41 near Buffer Lake. It's strange how this town was just left behind, If you draw a straight line from Smuts to Bents you would find that they are almost the same distance from Saskatoon as the "Crow Flies". Smuts has the same type of store's and home's but lack's the elevator, all thought it has a well kept church. Enjoy your walk through Smuts with me.....Mike

please leave this poor town alone, its not haunted and I know people who own lots on town so yes, you technically are trespassing, so many church breakins and its not abandoned! its so sad as the parisheners work hard to maintain it. I laugh at the peolle who complain they got chased out, what do u expect when its night time? deffinately not here to do any good...... I know people who chase these "nighttime tourists " away, they wont hurt you but your vehicle will be going to the body shop, just leave this poor place alone!!!

Just to correct some misinformation. Smuts would have been named for Jan Smuts, who was one of the Boer generals during the Boer War. After the defeat of the Boers he became a prominent South African politician, and supporter of the British Empire. He participated in the First World War. More importantly, during the Second World War he was a leading confidant of Winston Churchill. He lost political power in South Africa with the rise of the Nationalist (apartheid) government.

I went to Smuts yesterday and spent a few hours there. It was during the afternoon and I didn't have any trouble. The only people I saw were two women taking pictures of the church.

A few friends and I went to smuts last night. we were chased down the road and almost run off the highway by a few people of the "community" . We called the cops and they told us they were in the right and tried making it our fault for "trespassing". Do not go there unless you wang to be investigated for trespassing and vandalism . don't go

My friends and I went to check out Smuts a few nights ago. Tons of creepy shit happened and I definitely think its haunted, but I recommend not checking it out unless you wanna go to prison. We ended up getting pulled over by the police and he told us that the people who care for the church, once they see a vehicle they don't recognize they will immediately call him. People try to break into that Church all the time and break shit, plus its hard to get into the church anymore...the couple taking care of it bolted it shut good! So yeah

Me my boyfriend and two friends went there one night and i guess the owner of the house got into his véhicule and chased us down the road almost causing us to crash.we never went there again. Quite creepy there though

I went to Smuts today with my friend on an impromptu road trip, the only house that is there no longer is lived in it looks like. There are no curtains and no vehicles and most of the buildings in the area are surrounded by shrubbery.

Smuts was named after a British Army office by the CNR when they built the track from Melfort to Saskatoon. It died out because after the train service was removed, the grain elevators closed and then schools closed soon after. Your postings are curious and you do care but references to images and hint of apparitions have brough thrill seekers to come there and cause great amount of damage and vandalism to the old Grocery Store, Hotel and many times our Church (which is a National Heritage site). It has a fascinating history and great to hear people are genuinely interested, but please be careful what you write. Thankyou

I used to live in Alvena back in the mid-70's and would pass Smuts whenever we drove to Saskatoon; this is before the highway that goes right past Alvena was built. As a teenager I can remember going to a dance there, but even then it was little more than a ghost town. I was just wondering about this town yesterday and googled it, so was pleased to see your photos, although sad to see how it has deteriorated. I now live in Nova Scotia and haven't been back to SK in many years.

My one question is, I know this was a long long time ago but why hasn't anyone come forward about living there? Anyone that has told children who told grandchildren about where their great great grandparents lived then whythey moved. You would think it would be a storyu to tell children. One for the books, the records. But not just vanashing, no trace. Never even told a new neighbor. . . Weird for not opassing around this information

my girlfriend and our two friends explored the smuts town lastnight and we went up to the crosses and the baby crosses took some pictures but barely anything will show there were orbs (ectoplasm) on top the little crosses we go into the town take some more pictures and every single picture we have taken has ectoplasm all over uncountable amounts of orbs and faces (ex) we took this picture and a red demon face appeared in the middle of the screen faces in the old store faces in the old church and a full body apperition in the church top middle window followed by a terrifying scream it was an incredible discovery but ever since then i havent been feeling all that good we seen people we seen faces we saw over a thousand orbs(ectoplasm-peice of ones spirit) in that town it is a really good and interesting place to be during the day but i dont dare to go in those buildings during the night time of 3:00 .

An update on the hotel: it is impossible to go in there without hurting yourself. The floor is caved in, almost to the point of touching the main floor, floor- no way in hell u could walk in there and not fall onto the level under you.

Ha ha love the comments have been crossing the feilds and roads in Smuts for 34 years now and have toured most of the old buildings as a kid and still quad in the area and visit the people living out there. \|Nothing out there is haunted and everything is getting trashed from people with nothing better to do than wreck things!Leave the church be.

the story to this town is that in around 1930 the town had a virus/plaug running through it that ended up killing half the residents and the others all left in fear of becoming ill and dying. thats why all the houses still have stuff in them. the only building there thats in somewhat decent shape is the hotel however the upstairs you can only really go to the top as the floor is caving in all around the upstairs. and the floor on the main has a few holes. i didnt see any sort of activity however in the hotel when you go inside and upstairs exspecially it got colder then it was outside in the building. and a very eary feeling.

when you drive into the town and go straight til the end of the road, you will find a house on the hill. That's where i got the picture of an old lady in old time clothing standing in the window.

Grew up around Smuts. Alot of the hamlets and villages in the area are dying slowly. Not sure why Smuts died out so fast , but Alvena is another gem down the road thats dying fast. Bikers moved in , quit paying taxes and the RM took it over. Kind of a shame , as the've kinda messed up its charm. Definetly worth a drive by. Cheers !!!!!!!!

My grandparents had a farm half way between Smuts and Vonda. My brothers and I spent many summers with them. Smuts had two grain elevators at one time. I understand they were moved away many years ago. The church was orginally several miles south of its present location. I have memories of attending mass in this building. But this church - St. John The Baptist - has more significance for me. My father, Stephen Meush, was an artist who did many paintings of icons in this part of Saskatchewan, and, some of his work is in this church. If you have been to Yorkton at St. Mary's Church, you have seen the painting in the dome that he did.

We were looking around Smuts yesterday and someone has driven a truck into the front of the hotel and just left it there. It really adds to the feeling of abandonment. I took a couple of pictures if you're interested.
