So much remains and yet so little.


The Texas that I grew up in is vanishing. Between 1983 and 2005, 3.3 million acres of Texas, an area four times the size of Big Bend National Park, were paved over and urbanized. All of that native habitat and all of those old ranch houses and all of that wildlife --- lost. This gallery seeks, a pixel at a time, to preserve a Texas that is being bulldozed and scattered to the four winds.

I find myself drawn to the overlooked, to the ruined, to the fallen, to the forgotten, to dreamers and to faded dreams. My aim is to preserve the Texas of myth and pure, sweet memory. It is my hope that these images reflect that.

Well you have some amazing pictures. I just want to say how shocked I was to come across the Roadside Remembrance picture when I did a search on my mom's name. I broke down in tears when I saw it. Thank you for taking such a beautiful picture.

I visit this page often to see what you've added. As a long-displaced Texan who now works in the North Sea oilfields, I get quite homesick for my beloved state. Your photos make me very wistful for the place that I will return to when I retire. Whenever I want to show others how beautiful the Lone Star State really is, I just send them a link to your website. The images take me home.Being a 7th generation TEXAN now living in South Dakota you have done a great job capturing the Texas I grew up in. The only thing missing are Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbushes and of course Shiner Beer! Great Job, I will add you to my favorite artist.

Was a pleasure to revisit your gallery of 100 percent excellent images. Here I am looking up at a print of a painting by G. Harvey where a rider in a yellow slicker is headed back to the ranch -- with a field of oil derricks in the background. And whenever I fly between DFW and Tucson I look down on oil fields. Not seeing any oil wells in the gallery, I'm guessing they're not myth or memory yet?! :-)

Great to see this ongoing documentary project like this one that you are doing with such excellence! I guess that maybe the greatest power that photographs have are the ability to freeze time. And change to our landscapes and culture is taking place so fast now, and few of us are aware of it -- or even care. I grew up on the coast of Rhode Island, and things have changed so much there, I can't believe it. But it's nothing to the pace of change here in Arizona. In both places, it's really too late to document what was. I guess what I'm saying is: keep working on this project, because it's probably going to be progressively harder to find subjects. Thanks for the personal tour of your part of Texas.
