Have you ever wondered about the bumble bee? I mean, according to all "science" (or folklore), this bee wasn't supposed to be able to fly. The body was to be to heavy for the small wings. However, unaware of this conclusion, the bumble bee took flight and overcame the odds.
Well, now it appears that bumble bees are in danger of becoming extinct.(think of the photo ops that would be missed) In Britan, three species of bumble bees have already become extinct. This would be a terrible situation to be in, should bumble bees (or other pollenating insects) sease to exist. It would be widespread devastation.
Since plants are the primary food source for animals, the reduction of one of the primary pollination agents, or even their possible disappearance, has raised concern, and the conservation of pollinators has become part of biodiversity conservation efforts.
What can we do? While I am not sure what the answer is, I do know that for me and my family, we will create a pollinator friendly garden, avoid pesticides in our yard and gardens, and I will certainly think twice before I squash that bee!
