Community, by Cecilia Lim, Singapore, 2007

My outstretched left arm seems to be the focal point of this image, made by Malaysian pbase artist Celia Lim ( http://www.pbase.com/cecilialim ) following a magical day of shooting with a group of fellow pbase photographers in Singapore in late August, 2007. We had pulled four tables together at a local Starbucks, and turned the room into an impromptu conference center. Although everyone appears to living this moment in their own unique way here, the interplay of hands and arms lends a sense of community to the scene. The cameras in the foreground speak of our mutual passion. Our Singapore shoot was graciously hosted by pbase artist Ai Li Lim ( no relation to Cecila ), who sits at left center.

Thanks, Chris. You would have been right at home in this crowd. I am sure that these pbase photographers from Singapore, Malaysia, and the USA would have welcomed a fellow pbase photographer from Greece. And someday, when I next get back to Athens, we should have a similar gathering of pbase photographers. I'm sure there must be at least one Starbucks in Athens by now.

I am so glad that you were able to comment on this picture, Ai Li, since none of this would have ever happened if not for your kindness and efforts on our behalf. And yes, there are indeed four circles bonded by common passion here -- symbolizing the boundless nature of friendship. It was an honor for me to share this time with you -- the warmth of your welcome can still be felt ten months later. Thanks to Celia, this image will keep this memory fresh for all of us to share.

Do you realise that it's been 10 months since we last met and had our coffee together? :-) Thanks to Celia, it felt like yesterday! Each hand expression, each eye contact, each photographic mind, seemed to carry many thoughts and exchanges. I'm fortunate to be able to spend time with you all, thanks for the fond memories! Friendship is indeed like a circle, no beginning, no end... And here we got four circles, nicely bonded by a common passion :-)

Thanks, Carol, Sofia, and Vera, for coming to Cecilia's image. The round tables do create a pattern that of circles that seem to levitate below my outstretched arm. And yes, Starbucks has become a Singapore institution. I somehow knew we would windup there. As for those common interests, Vera, I see three of them. We are all photographers. We enjoy good coffee. And we have become friends as well, and as friends we enjoy each other's company.

It is so amazing how one common interest can bring people together in harmony...that and the love of coffee :-)
