June 14 - Toxaway River

Many of you already know this but for those who don't, this is Toxaway Falls with Lake Toxaway behind it. The bridge at the top of the falls is Hwy 64. Gorges State Park now owns the land on the right side of the waterfall below 64, but the land on the left side is private property with a few homes and condos. Unfortunately, the best access to the rock to the left of the falls is on the private side and it's marked with no trespassing signs. Last week someone that owns property on that side emailed me asking if I'd be willing to trade use of one of my photos for access to the waterfall from the private side. You betcha! So Saturday's adventure was set - another exploration of the river down as far as we could go. Harry and I had done this back in 2002 - I guess we trespassed - but Bernie and John hadn't seen this part of the river, so today we were a 4some.

Another tidbit of info that is explained in more detail in Kevin Adam's NC waterfall guide is that in 1916, the dam holding the lake gave way. All that water gushed down the river stripping vegetation down to bare bedrock. Remember that as you look at some of these images. I shot this image in October 2006.
