Tutor, by Rusty Latshaw, Phoenix, Arizona, 2008

Rusty http://www.pbase.com/russellt ) has traveled from Pennsylvania to Arizona three times in three years to work with me in my one on one tutorial training sessions. He made hundreds of images during his two days with me, but the one that we both liked the best was a portrait he made of me during lunch in a very dark restaurant. Rusty has come to appreciate the value of shadow as an abstracting medium, and in this image he makes use of shadow to its full extent. Using a single bulb in an overhead fixture as his light source, Rusty finds me in a reflective mood. I was studying the menus of my own camera at the moment, and had no idea he was photographing me. He uses a high ISO to make the image, which largely envelops me in darkness. It is an appropriate darkness – our time together was filled with explorations that involved mutual discoveries and many unknowns. The image is intimate and subdued, an interlude of unusual silence, a rare moment during our intensive interplay of teaching and learning.

Phil, this portrait captures the hidden wisdom I saw in you and your work from the first. The subtle play of light and shadow on your face and glasses expresses your subtle seeing of life in all its complexity. Bravo to Rusty for this gift!

Thanks, Jen, for seeing in this image what Rusty intended. Teaching is a form of illumination, and Rusty symbolically uses the interplay of light and shadow here to comment on my method of teaching. Abstraction can make any subject matter appear to be timeless and often metaphorical, and Rusty uses the darkness here to allow the viewer to see me in a more symbolic, less specific form. He often does this -- abstracting through shadow is an essential part of Rusty's photographic style.

I love this portrait so much! It is a perfect example of how we can still make great pictures when the light is not most favorable. Maybe next time I wouldn't put away my camera and complain about there is not enough light for making pictures.

This is a very intimate portrait, and when I look at it, I feel I was drawn into the image and reflect with you too. Your face seems emerging from the darkness, and it is like your wisdom is the only light source that can light the world. You look like a philosopher thinking over some ultimate questions about life, the world and the universe, and it makes you look timeless. It is indeed a timeless portrait, great work Rusty!

Thanks, Alexeig for this comment. I agree -- this is a daring portrait. Rusty holds delicate details while abstracting me as much as he can here. Photography is all about the interplay of light and shadow. I am a photographer. He brings both together here.

Thanks, Jenene, for this observation. I just spent two intensive days working with Rusty, and we talked at length about just that -- the art of taking images to that fine edge where light and darkness converge. He does it for meaning, rather than effect, as you point out, by stressing the way light passes through my glasses as symbolic illumination. His new camera, the Leica M8, is an excellent tool for this kind of work.

The darkness serves the reflective mood very well here. I always like how Rusty pushes his images to the bleeding edge using dark values, including enough light to emphasize the main theme of the image. The light through your glasses further underscores the idea of illuminating discoveries for you both.

Thanks, Dan -- I am sure Rusty will be pleased. He cropped the image effectively, and the degree of abstraction keeps the image from becoming intrusive at this close a distance.
