I wonder – how can we be alone when we are surrounded by people?

Thanks for all your welcoming and encouraging words!
It's really good to feel involved with pictures again.

You've done a marvelous job of isolating the girl on the right from the rest of the crowd, which fosters various theories as to why she is alone. No matter the 'why' or even the 'if', this is storytelling at it's most masterful, Ai Li. Beautifully rendered.

It's too easy to feel alone when surrounded by others... wonderful scene!

Food for thought indeed.

I think she just needs an invite to the party though
possibly she might be heading for TV and a cup of tea.

A wonderful slice of life! All feelings and relationships seem to be captured here. I could look at it for ages and still keep seeing more things. Brava, my street-smart friend!

Your words really made me feel this image.
I have said before there have been times where I have been in a room full of people but have still felt alone. It usually only takes that one special person that makes us feel complete.
LoVe it.

I keep coming back to look at this. So many stories come to my mind. Is this girl really lonely, entering a sad little apartment or has she just said good bye to her friends? An on and on.

... I guess because loneliness stays even inside the shell of the skin. The opposition between the smiling crowd and the lonely and sad looking woman really illustrates the idea.
Your black and white is really excellent, and the composition well balanced.

She is alone, but hopefully not lonely.
Excellent story telling shot.

Wonderful street scene. I understand your words. I've felt like that many times. But, only those close to us can remedy that feeling. The girl on the left looks timid or feels like she just maybe wants to be alone. Love the feeling in this image and the questions it asks. Well done, Al Li! I've missed you terribly!;)

True; and a nicely present illustration of the thought.
But being alone isn't necessarily bad; having the power to choose when to be alone can be wonderful. But not having the choice ... either way, not having the choice is not good.

Ironic isn't it...how we often feel the loneliest when we're surrounded by people.
You captured so many expressions in this photo. Each expression and gesture of the people "speak."
A brilliant capture!!

More and more people continue to live on their own. Quite a sad reflection of this world, isn't it?
