Lessons Learned

This actually happened over a year ago but I saved it as a reminder. As I was getting out of a 4x4 pickup truck my 70-300mm zoom lens fell out of my camera bag. Of course it fell the four feet to the pavement below and hit with such a nasty sound. To make it worse, it then rolled under the vehicle parked next to the truck stopping dead center under that vehicle. I only said one word when this happened - Sh**.
As I crawled on the ground and reached under the vehicle to retrieve my lens, my heart was crushed thinking I just busted my lens. Upon holding it, I heard the "chink chink" sound of broken glass. I didn't want to find out what that meant but I had to. I sat back in the truck and tried to remove the lens cap. I couldn't budge it. After some thought, I decided to unscrew the filter from the lens. The relief when I saw that the filter broke and the lens cap was bent but the lens seemed fine. Hours later I had calmed down enough to take an image with the lens and it was fine. I was lucky.

Lessons learned: always make sure your gear is secure before moving around and always use a protective filter on your lens.

Tough lens! Thank goodness this story had a happy ending!

Excellent reminder. I'm one of those that put a filter on every lens--a filter is a lot less expensive to replace than a lens--and all my gear is insured.

I am one of those that don't like more glass in front of the shutter than I have to have, therefore I don't keep filters on my lenses unless I am actively using them. I know that I will pay for that one day and then I may change the way I do things, but until then....reckless abandon.

Filters are (relatively) cheap. Lenses are not.

So the first thing I see is the "New" 105mm F/2.8 AF-S VRII Macro...how cool is that huh...So I'm not in the norm here I leave my camera bag open most of the time to get that shot fast....I have filters on some lens's and none on others..out of the norm here too. But Glenn and Marni can say I'm very carefull with my gear...and sometime to carefull..like the time I fell thought the stairs....camera never even got dust on it...but I cracked my ribs......But a nice reminder all the same.......Bravo....Mike

Definitely a good "reminder" image. I know I get careless from time to time and leave my camera bag unzipped, only to have it moved and things almost fall out. Thank you for showing what can happen in less than a blink.

Yup, I’d keep this image around too. I’d frame it big right above my camera bag. Thanks for sharing this lesson and I will always think of this image now when I go to quickly grab my Camera bag.
