new gallery--Ice skating in downtown Detroit

I've just put up a new gallery called "Ice skating in downtown Detroit. CLICK HERE to see it.

These are photos I took on Thursday using my new used Canon 100-300mm telephoto lens. A friend sold it to me for a really great price because she had bought a new one with image stabilization. I've always wondered if I could manage to hold onto one of these long lens--as many of you know, my hands are less than able--but it seemed to work out fine as long as I kept it propped on the ledge surrounding the rink. However I can tell it will take me awhile to get the hang of focusing properly. Getting comfortable with a new lens is like making a new friend--it takes time.

I once read an article saying that if you focus on your equipment too much, only technically good pictures will be produced. I can see from your pictures that you're a creative artist. That's why the equipment is not important to you.

A very nice picture, Pat! Happy New Year!

Using a ledge, wall or table is an excellent way to deal with the telephoto, especially w/o IS. I find I rarely use my long lenses, but when I do, a monopod is a great help. (If I can stand to carry it around!) Congrats on your first efforts - action shots with a telephoto are not that easy!

A fine catch, Patricia. I hope you enjoy using the new lens, and I endorse Barry's suggestion about a monopod - I use mine whenever possible. ~V~

You captured a good moment. Fine work with your new lens, congratulations.
As Barry says, monopod is a great alternative to the conventional tripode.

Great shot Patricia, colourful and a good story for sure. Try setting the ISO to 800 as the noise is still hardle noticeable and any shake would be greatly reduced. Monopod's and walls work really well too. Doesn't this lens autofocus?
