motion & stillness

I've been working with my Detroit Institute of Arts photos and, strangely enough, this is my favorite so far. There's something about its minimalism that appeals to me. I'd guess I took a dozen photos from that vantage point--looking over the railing from the third floor down to the second--and am now wondering if they might make an interesting gallery on their own. I'll know when I've prepared all the photos in this series.

I feel so fortunate to be a photographer. Nothing ever slips totally under my radar.

I'm with Vera on this one -- the lady who is reading is the key to the image for me. Reading is the antithesis of hurrying. You make the reader the subject and the motion into the context. That's the incongruity here. She seems to be reading a floor plan of the museum. She is probably planning her own next move. But for now, she is still. You abstract the scene by choosing this overhead vantage point and a slow shutter speed. The high vantage point and resulting blur obscure the identity of the people, changing them from specific individuals to symbolic figures.

What perfect timing. The folks moving form a line with those sitting. Then there are the lines on the floor topped by the geometric shape of the chairs. I like the fact she is looking at a book. To me, it demonstrates that even with all these people moving around people can find solitude...given a book.

That's a tough photo to look at for too long. Just when my eyes reconcile the motion of the people, the floor starts getting wavy-looking with that fan-fold effect. A real visual treat! Well done.
