This 9-year-old Croatian girl was playing in Vitez when a mortar round exploded nearby. Five kids were killed and a number were wounded. She lost her left arm but was otherwise untouched by the shell.
Mr Mason, all your photos of the wars in Croatia and Bosnia are amazing, but I find myself most shaken by the photos of the affected children. I was also a very young child during the war, but I had the luck of being born in a part of Croatia not affected by the war, and all my family members who went to war returned safely, so thankfully my only memories of it are watching the news and my mother crying all the time. There are of course iconic pictures of the war which I've often seen, but I'd never really gone through a collection of photos like this one, and I've found them (and the stories that accompany them) amazing, emotional and informative. I guess, what I'm trying to say is, thank you so much for putting these up online!
