Old McKinnon Cemetery

Thanks to John McRae for this image. Below is his statement which I will use as the caption for this image. Also NOTE: Charles McKinnon was a surveyor and laid out the town of Jacksonville, Ga. Old McKinnon Cemetery is located off Highway 117 (not seen from the main road) just west of the Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery.

This picture is of me (John McRae) with a sign that George McKinnon had made. Charles McKinnon whom the cemetery is named after was George's 3rd Great Grandfather. This picture shows the cemetery at about half way through the process of removing the undergrowth.

My 3rd Great-Grandmother Catherine McRae, Revolutionary War Widow, born in Scotland and died at China Hill in 1856 at age 95, is buried here. Two of her sons, Duncan McRae and Norman McRae, are also buried here along with many other family members. Duncan was a judge, lawyer, planter and owned a saw mill at China Hill; he married Janet McKinnon, Daughter of Charles McKinnon. Norman, my GG Grandfather was a Lawyer, Judge, Planter, Georgia State Senator , and Georgia State Representative, when the capitol was at Milledgeville.

Thanks , John Wayne McRae.

The cemetery has been cleared. I drive up from Jacksonville , Florida twice each year to mow and clean. I have installed 200 feet of 4 foot chain link fence across part of the front . Facing the sign, the cemetery extends to the right all the way to the road from "Big Daddy" Bloodsworth's old place. New graves have been discovered. Most are surfaced with bricks. Every effort is made to protect and preserve the cemetery. I have not had the time to do a complete survey, but the first 5-6 rows (about 10 feet wide),starting from the fence going east, contain over 100 graves.
