On the summit, looking at the vehicles far away on the salt flats

Floating Island, Utah

The main goal of this hike was to sit on the south summit of Floating Island and look at the World of Speed event taking place on the salt flats. From this height (500 feet or 152m) above the surrounding playa, and without binoculars, I was barely able to see the collection of vehicles on the salt. The use of binoculars revealed considerable detail: I even saw a racing car's braking chute open as it ended its run. The only animal life I observed here were a zillion ants, a few lizards, and a hawk. I was the only person at the island, reveling in the solitude. The racing pits are 12 miles (20km) distant. The city of Wendover, Utah is about 20 miles (32km) straight ahead.

This is a larger and (vertically) cropped version of the file I uploaded at Moab. Joe Tripod, who helps me with self-portraits, doesn't give a hoot about distance, elevation, or cropping.

Those are special moments, when one can find oneself completely alone, in a wide open space. Rare indeed.

High 70s or low 80s as I recall: perfect weather.

Joe's quite the rebel (not, of course, a Rebel). He sure takes a pretty picture though. Was it hot?
