The Poet Conrad Aikens (1889-1973)was born in Savannah and orphaned at 11 years-old. The poem Strange Moonlight eludes to the reason why his father shot his mother and then himself. Conrad awoke one morning to the sound of an arguement going on in his parents bedroom. He heard his fater say, "One...two...three," then heard a gunshot. His father said, "One...two...three again and another gunshot. Conrad ran across the street to the sheriff's office. Conrad was raised by relatives up north and graduated from Harvard. He was a Pulitzer prize winning poet and was assigned to the Poetry chair. He lived his first and last 11 years in Savannah.
