This map on display at Checkpoint Charlie shows where the Wall used to run through central Berlin. At the bottom, is Checkpoint Charlie. To its east is the memorial for the Wall’s first victim, Peter Fechter. On Aug 17, 1962, Fechter and his friend attempted escape. While his friend made it safely over the wall, Fechter was shot in the hip by DDR guards and felt back into the death-strip. He screamed in agony for an hour before bleeding to death. Fechter was 18.
