Maria-Theresien Platz

Vienna, Austria view map

The statue of Maria Theresa by sculptor Kaspar von Zumbusch in front of the Art History Museum (Kunsthistorisches Museum)
She is shown surrounded by her 4 generals on horseback and other notable persons during her reign. In the center is the composer Mozart shown as a boy.

Maria Theresa ruled Austria from 1740-1780. Due to her father, the emperor Charles VI, lacking a male heir, she ascended the Habsburg throne and triggered the War of the Austrian Succession.
She held every Habsburg imperial title except one, including the Queen of Bohemia, Queen of Hungary, and Archduchess of Austria. Being female, she was ineligible for the crown of the Holy Roman Empire. Her husband Francis, the Duke of Lorraine, and later her son Joseph II, held that title. For this reason, the Habsburg Monarchy was also known from this time as the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.

You know the way to a feminist's heart - through women's history (herstory). Thank you for including this information about Queen Maria Theresa. I loved art history at the Univ. in Salt Lake City, but female artists were rarely mentioned. Some of the paintings and sculptures were done by Anonymous. That's true of literature by women in the long ago past. I spoke out in class, "Anonymous was a woman!" The male identified female Prof. shouted back, "Anonymous was a man!" Men didn't have to use Anonymous nor use a female name so their art would be well reviewed and/ or sell. In an ancient history class, the professor spoke almost totally of men. When I asked him "What were women doing in that era, he was always able to tell us and did. Thank you, Karen Walling
