Bluegrass Stone Fence

Lexington, KY

Almost any 2-lane road in the Bluegrass country will have miles of these beautiful, intricately constructed rock fences.

There's a myth that they were built by slaves during the Civil War but in fact, they were constructed by Irish stonemasons who immigrated into the Bluegrass in the early 1800's. These masons passed on their craft to slaves which lead to the rock fences being called "slave walls."

Preservations efforts are being made to preserve this unique feature that compliments so many of the beautiful Kentucky horse farms.
