As far as I know Zimmerit was a kind of compound which were dished up with paint brush or similiar tools on the WHOLE skin of those tanks. There were late versions of other tanktypes, too - like the Panzer IV - which used Zimmerit.

Zimmerit were used to prevent the tanks from magnetic anti-tank-mines. I don`t know how thick those compound on the tank-skin exactly was but I don`t think that anybody knows.
