SITE OF ABANDONED TOWN OF BANKHEAD

Alberta Canada

7 kms outside Banff
Founded in 1902, this was a mining town with a population of 1500 that thrived for over a decade supplying coal to the Canadian Pacific Raiway. However, by 1922 with the declining quality of the coal left and sricken by labour strikes, the mine was forced to close. Its residents moved out, mainly to Banff. Some removed their wooden houses with them to Banff, where a few remain standing today. The rest of the town was pulled down and very little remains today.....see next image.

It's sad to see that people had better environmental awareness back in to beginning of last century than nowadays, while shutting down main pollutans. Looking at the next image I started to realize that they even hired bulldozer to level town with the ground, holy smokes !
