St Ciaran's Bush

Clareen / Co. Offaly

Also known irreverently as the rag bush. There is a local tradition that the bush cures illness if a piece of the persons clothing is placed on the bush. The bush has become increasingly busy which says something about the state of medical services. There is also a tradition that it is unlucky to pass the bush on the wrong side. The bush is associated with the early monastery founded by St Ciaran. St Ciaran may have preceded St Patrick.
