Jay

Garrulus glandarius

Family: Crows and allies (Corvidae)

Although they are the most colourful members of the crow family, jays are actually quite difficult to see. They are shy woodland birds, rarely moving far from cover. The screaming call usually lets you know a jay is about and it is usually given when a bird is on the move, so watch for a bird flying between the trees with its distinctive flash of white on the rump. Jays are famous for their acorn feeding habits and in the autumn you may see them burying acorns for retrieving later in the winter.

I Have seen a Jay in my garden a couple of days ago,and today i have seen a pair. I did not know what they were, so had to look them up on the internet. They were feeding on the meal worms i have put out. I live near Delamere Forest in Cheshire so they probably may have come from close by. I am hoping they come back again.

First time I have ever seen one and it was flying between two pigeons. Appeared to be uncovering peanuts which had fallen from a squirrel feeding box.

We've been watching for several days what we now know are two Jays feeding on nuts and seeds in our ground feeders in garden here in River Kent. What gorgeous birds. Took ages to find out what they are coz I grew up seeing Blue Jays in my youth on E Coast USA but never this type. How cool!

Just seen for the first time a Jay! Had to look it up on web to Idwhat it was. We watched it for about 5 minutes
Trying to eat the fat ball in the hanger I put in the tree at the front of our house! We also had a visit on Monday from a woodpecker to the same tree! We feel truly honoured.

I had a lovely jay about 3 or 4 feet from my kitchen window today stealing the suet pellets, mealworms and peanuts which I had put out for my usual garden birds. It was absolutely stunning. I couldn't believe that it had come so close as they are known to be very shy. Now I can't stay away from the window in the hope that it will return! I have lived here for 29 years and have had many different birds in my garden but never a jay.

we had a blackbird nesting in our garage sat on four eggs its got in through a small enough hole in the broken window the eggs must have almost been ready to hatch, then this morning we noticed the female gone for more than its normal few minutes so i checked and noticed all the eggs had gone an hour or so later my wife and i were looking in the garden and noticed a couple of jays in the tree at the back of the garden which we have never seen before and from what i have read they are known for steeling blackbirds eggs

We have common land behind our house in Swansea and recently we've noticed and heard! five Jays. They are far from being shy and come down into the garden to use the birdfeeder. This is the first time we've ever seen them here in the 25 years we've lived here.

I have a pair of these that just started visiting my garden last week.... they come every day but not always together. Seem to have alot more larger birds visiting since I started using Robin Feed, including a pair of Collared Doves & Magpies. I'm not a bird watcher & I only put the bird feeder in my garden about a month ago for the kids..... can't believe how busy the feeder gets & how much food they are all getting through!!!!

I was sitting on a bench on the edge of a small woods locally, miles away dreaming when one of these little fellas came and sat right next to me, jumped around a few times, pecked my boots, then landed on my knee and pecked a stud button on my coat, what an unbelievable experience i was blown away !!!

My daughter spotted one in the trees edging the park across the road from our house. Now there seems to be small family of them. Caused a bit of excitement here.
